The Ythan Project

Nutrient Budgeting

The Ythan Project assisted farmers to protect the river though the provision of nutrient budgets.

These work in the same way as a financial budget, and look at what's come onto the farm and what's left the farm in terms of nutrients and try to reduce any leakage or loss of nutrients in the system. Although the calculations required to do this are relatively simple, they can be time consuming for farmers to undertake for each field.

In order to assist farmers to undertake budgets on their own farms, the Ythan Project contracted the University of Hertfordshire to create some computer software which will speed up a lot of the calculations and so assists farmers to complete a budget for each field.

This software was completed in 2003 and project staff time was available for the following 18 months to assist farmers with completing budgets. During the life of the project, 62 farmers in the Ythan catchment were assisted with completing budgets for their farms. The software was also provided to local agricultural advisors so they could help other farmers to complete budgets after the project was finished.

A full evaluation report on the software and its use on farms can be found on the publications page. If you would like to receive a copy of the software please contact Aberdeenshire Council by clicking here.
